How to Verify a California Contractor

Before hiring any contractor in California, check these five items to protect yourself and your investment.

  1. License is active.
A valid California contractor license is required for any project over $500 in combined labor and materials.
  2. Contractor bond is current.
The bond protects you if the contractor fails to fulfill their contractual obligations or violates CSLB regulations.
  3. Workers’ compensation insurance is on file.
Without it, you could be liable if a worker is injured on your property. Contractors with no employees may file an exemption.
  4. No unresolved disciplinary actions.
Check for citations, fines, or license suspensions that may indicate a pattern of violations.
  5. Classification matches your project.
A C-36 Plumbing license does not authorize electrical work. Confirm the contractor holds the right license type for your job.
