What Does a C-33 License Cover?

Prepares surfaces by scraping, sandblasting, or other means and applies paints, papers, textures, fabrics, pigments, oils, varnishes, shellacs, stains, waxes, adhesives, and other coatings for decorating, protecting, fireproofing, and waterproofing.

Hiring a Painting and Decorating Contractor

Painting projects on older homes may involve lead paint. California requires contractors working on pre-1978 homes to be EPA RRP certified. Ask about surface preparation methods, number of coats, and paint warranty.

A California contractor license is generally required when a project costs $1,000 or more in combined labor and materials, requires a building permit, or uses additional workers. Small jobs cannot be split from a larger project to qualify for the exemption. Read the CSLB requirements.
