What Does a C-36 License Cover?

Provides means for a supply of safe water and proper disposal of fluid waste, including piping, storage tanks, venting, gas appliances and connections, water and gas piping, water heating equipment including solar, and health and safety devices such as backflow preventers and gas earthquake valves.

Does not include forced warm-air units (see C-20).

Hiring tip

Plumbing work requires permits in California for most projects beyond simple fixture swaps. Verify the contractor pulls permits and that all work will be inspected. Ask about warranty coverage for both parts and labor.

A California contractor license is generally required when a project costs $1,000 or more in combined labor and materials, requires a building permit, or uses additional workers. Small jobs cannot be split from a larger project to qualify for the exemption. Read the CSLB requirements.
