What Does a C-5 License Cover?

Performs form work, framing, and rough carpentry for framed structures, including sub-flooring, siding, exterior staircases and railings, overhead doors, roof decking, truss members, and sheathing.

Hiring tip

Framing and rough carpentry is structural work that requires building permits and inspections. Verify the contractor carries workers' compensation insurance, as framing is a high-risk trade. Ask for references from recent projects of similar scope.

A California contractor license is generally required when a project costs $1,000 or more in combined labor and materials, requires a building permit, or uses additional workers. Small jobs cannot be split from a larger project to qualify for the exemption. Read the CSLB requirements.
