How to Verify a California Contractor
Before hiring any contractor in California, check these five items to protect yourself and your investment.
-
License is active.
A valid California contractor license is required for any project over $500 in combined labor and materials. -
Contractor bond is current.
The bond protects you if the contractor fails to fulfill their contractual obligations or violates CSLB regulations. -
Workers’ compensation insurance is on file.
Without it, you could be liable if a worker is injured on your property. Contractors with no employees may file an exemption. -
No unresolved disciplinary actions.
Check for citations, fines, or license suspensions that may indicate a pattern of violations. -
Classification matches your project.
A C-36 Plumbing license does not authorize electrical work. Confirm the contractor holds the right license type for your job.
