Check before you hire

Before hiring any contractor in California, check these five items to protect yourself and your investment.

1. License is active
   Generally required for projects of $1,000 or more, work requiring a permit, or work using additional workers.
2. Contractor bond is current
   Protects you if the contractor fails to fulfill their obligations or violates CSLB regulations.
3. Workers compensation insurance on file
   Without it, you could be liable if a worker is injured on your property.
4. No unresolved disciplinary actions
   Check for citations, fines, or license suspensions that may indicate a pattern of violations.
5. Classification matches your project
   A C-36 Plumbing license does not authorize electrical work. Confirm the right license type.
